Late summer in the New Forest and the heather is at its peak, a sea of rich lilac flowers stretching in all directions across the broad, open heathland. This young fallow deer had been lying low in the heather when I spotted it. As I clumsily tried to get closer – these deer are properly wild and very nervous of human presence - it stood up and looked directly at me. I quickly took my chance to capture the shot.
These moments when wildlife pauses just long enough are rare but very special when all the beautiful elements come together. There is never time to setup a tripod, I have to shoot quickly. This one was a particularly slow shutter speed so I was thankful it stayed still just long enough.
